Things better left in 2012

It's funny how when a new year rolls around, it feels like a new beginning.  Everyone is ready to change something in their lives and start fresh.  It's a comforting feeling to think we may get a second chance to do better or be better.

But let's get serious.  At the end of the day, January 1 is still just the day after December 31 and unfortunately, a lot of the negative things from 2012 ended up right alongside us on January 1.

So, without further ado, here are a few of the things I wish had stayed in 2012...

That 8 lbs I gained August - December

Psy, Justin Beiber, Ke$ha, One Direction, Lindsay Lohan, etc...

Student Loans (...all bills actually)

Dog hair & paw prints that make it impossible to keep the floor clean

Weather under 30 degrees without possibility of snow

My unhealthy need to eat the Oreo cookies my coworker has stashed in his bottom desk drawer

My fear of the future

My fear of not being a good enough person, friend, employee, wife, etc...

My husbands' old, stained yellow GA Tech sweatshirt

5 day work weeks...(they should be no more than 4 tops)

Negative social media posts tearing others down for having different personal/political beliefs

Anonymous blog comment spam

Dog slobber (anyone who has a lab will get this)

Distance that separates me from my favorite people in the world

Sadness (yes, I have this from time to time)

Envy (this happens too)...

What would you like to leave in 2012??

It's Tuesday and I'm a Nerd

Greetings!  Welcome to my Tuesday...it's pretty random.

First things first....I think it's important for you to know that I am a HUGE loser.  Why, you ask?  Well, aside from the obvious - I feel it's important to tell you that I have read 5...FIVE....books in the last 7 days.  We are not talking about kids books or ones with only pictures.  We are talking about actual full-length novels.  This means that not only am I a giant nerd, I have been neglecting everything in my silly  life.  That includes meals, cleaning house, this blog, and unfortunately my husband as well.

Alternatively, my husband is now on the 3rd chapter of the book he began in mid-November.  He reads exactly seven sentences a night before falling asleep face down on his pillow. Clearly we are cut from 2 different cloths.

Even now, having just finished my most recent book choice, I am wondering what to read next.  I think I may have seen smoke coming off of my Kindle after that last download.  It's begging for rest.  But sadly, I am an addict.  And I am counting on some of my fellow bloggers to help feed my addiction.  How?  Book recommendations.  I need them.  I promise after this last one, I'll quit.  Maybe.

Moving on....

I've had a hankering lately to make a big purchase.  What kind of purchase?  I'm not sure.  I have this itch to by myself something expensive, and have to remind myself daily, "Self, STFU...you just bought a car and need nothing else."  My Self is right.  I don't need anything.  But I want.  I want an expensive pair of sunglasses, a purse, a watch, new clothes, and to lose 10 lbs.

Okay, that last thing isn't a purchase, but I still want it.

Have I come into money?  No.  Did I have a blow out commission in December?  Not so much.  The only explanation is that I've lost my mind.  Buying expensive things like that is so. not. me.  It's like I woke up on January 1 with an urge to set all my money on fire and read a bunch of crap.  Who am I?

Lastly, now that it is January and I am setting nicely into my seasonal affective disorder, I am hankering for a vacation to somewhere warm.  I need vitamin D in my life!  But alas we've come full circle because if I book a vacation, I'm going to want to buy expensive things to take on said vacation where I will ultimately lay on a lounge chair and read my books.  Clearly there is no helping me.

That's pretty much all I got today.  I'm really sorry if you read this whole post.  It's was weird and random.  I blame it on the Novocaine from the cavity I had filled earlier.  I always ask for extra shots!

14 days

Folks, watch out.  As of today, I am officially on the South Beach Phase one diet.  For the next 14 days, I will be cleansing by body of all the junk that is making me feel like a busted can of biscuits every time I get dressed.

The truth is that in the last 4 months, I have somehow managed to gain 5-10 lbs, and I have NO idea how or where it came from.  I feel like I eat pretty healthy, and I work out/run about 6 days a week.  I have even cut out alcohol during the week over the last month or two, and I still can tell my clothes are fitting a little different.  I don't think my eating habits have changed since this summer and I know my workout habits haven't changed so I am not sure what gives.

Pics of me from this summer...would not be caught dead in public in these outfits right now.

And no....I'm NOT pregnant!  I know that's what some of you were thinking.

Anyways, I'm pretty much over feeling disgusting, and I know my husband is over hearing me complain about it when he says he can't tell a difference.  Time to take action....and this is what I'm trying.

No, I have not read the South Beach Diet book.  No, I have not done the diet before, nor have I done the cleanse before.  So why do I think it will work?  Because I googled it and printed out a food list of stuff I can eat.  It seems pretty reasonable, and not altogether different from what I eat now.  Basically it is a no carb, no sugar fast.  I'm cool with that.  I hope.

So, at the risk of being a heinous, carb-deprived bitch for the next 14 days, I am trying this out.  Please pray for my husband...he'll need it.  Especially with the buckets of Halloween candy I have to give out on Wednesday.  Maybe pray that I don't scream at any small children while they are trick-or-treating too.  And also pray that I don't turn into Penny from Happy Endings by the second week.

So there you have it...if I seem a little irritable on the blog or other social media in the next couple weeks...well, this is probably why.  I'll keep you fellow readers updated on how I'm feeling during the next 14 days and if I see any improvement.  And now I leave you with another funny Penny clip from Happy Endings and something I could totally see myself doing....Thank the little baby Jesus this show is back...

Funkytown

Do you ever feel like you are in a total funk?  Like everything is just so....blah?  I am definitely in Funkytown right now.  Blog Funkytown.  Over the past few weeks I feel like I haven't had much to say or even the time to say it.

Sometimes I don't know what to make of my little blog.  I want it to be fun and original, but sometimes my brain turns into a runny egg, and when that happens, I just can't find the ideas or the words to "create".  What then?  I want to blog more frequently, but I put so much time and energy into each post that if I don't think I can write it the way I want it, then is it even worth it?  I don't know.  Does any of that make sense?  Does anyone else feel this way??

Of course, I am so grateful for each of my wonderful followers, especially the people who have been reading from the beginning.  It's a wonderful thing having people on this journey with me.  But....sometimes I write things and I feel like once I hit "publish" these words go out into the black abyss and I'm not sure they mean anything or if they have even been read.  Is that silly?  Does anyone ever have that feeling like you're living in a TV that's always on and you want to walk up to the screen and say "Knock, knock...anybody home??"  Maybe it's just me.

I've also been trying to sort through whether or not to work on actively growing my blog.  I struggle with this because I have thought about sponsoring other blogs before but felt that it wouldn't be fair if I couldn't devote my time to really working on my blog.  Now that my wedding is over, my time has freed up quite a bit, but I still have the problem of this crappy little computer I work on.  I mean, uploading pictures on this thing is a total joke.  It's very time consuming.  And I am equally impatient.  Like, get mad and throw my computer impatient.  It hasn't happened yet, I sometimes I can visualize myself doing it.  Like right now...

I honestly don't know why I'm sharing all of this with you...maybe in hopes that one of my fellow bloggers "gets it".  I am also curious for you loyal, wonderful readers...what kind of posts do you enjoy reading most?  What do you want to know about me/my life??  What makes you laugh?  How do you maintain your originality when you are creating your posts?  Have you made the decision to sponsor other blogs...was it worth it?

Have you ever been to Funkytown?

P.S...This inspires me...

It's Friday!!!

Because it's Friday.....

I can honestly say it has been a crazy, busy week and I am exhausted.  The good news is that I have been so busy that the week flew by and it is now time (well, in a few hours) for a bitch to get drunk!

Since I have been pretty adamantly sticking to my new rule of no drinking during the work week, I have started a new routine of driving straight to the liquor store on my way home from work, with my mouth practically watering.  I may have also been known to fill up a glass of white wine with ice cubes because after 4 days without the juice, I am too iimpatient to chill my wine.  Because I'm super classy like that.

Along with a crazy week with lots to do and a lot of windshield time (I'm in sales after-all), this week was particularly stressful because someone brought several boxes of donuts into our office yesterday.  Who would do that to me?  Talk about inconsiderate.  Fortunately for me, we don't work in a high rise building.

To top it off, several fun-sized bags of M&Ms and snickers found their way into our office kitchen today and will soon find their way into my mouth.  Thanks for that.  Nothing "fun-sized" about my weakness for chocolate or my ass.

Anywho, hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

If You Really Knew Me - A Guest Post from the Boy

I had been mulling around with the idea of having the boy do a little guest post, and thought it would be perfect for him to do his own version of the "If You Really Knew Me" theme that many of my fellow bloggers have been participating in.  I originally saw this on Kelly's blog, and I think Kelly saw it somewhere else.  Regardless...it was a cute idea and I couldn't pass it up!  So without further ado, here is what my husband wrote (verbatim)...

1
If you really knew Taryn you would know that she really loves our dogs.  She calls them our furry children.  And she means it.

2
If you really knew Taryn, she is really cute when she doesn't even know it.  Example: when we are relaxing on the couch at the end of the night, she looks at at me with her glasses on the tip of her nose, sweatpants and old t-shirt on wrapped up in a blanket playing on her laptop.  She looks at me and wonders why I can't stop staring at her.

3
If you really knew Taryn, you would know that she is an all caring all loving person.  She has a wall that you have to get around but its only a test/challenge to see if your up to it.

4
If you really knew Taryn, she loves the dumbest shows.  I came home the other night to her watching Laguna Beach, which if you're not familiar "it" would be a rerun of a reality tv show from 2003.  I know I am shaking my head also.

5
If you really knew Taryn, she is a major planner. She plans out her days, vacations, and holidays.  She is always listens to what everyone wants to do, but leave the fine details to her.

6
If you really knew Taryn, she always gives the most thought out gifts, the most well written birthday cards and everyone looks forward to her presents.

7
If you really knew Taryn, you would know she loves to write. Writing for Taryn is her therapy session, and a chance for her to get things off her chest.  She has been given a gift to creatively put down in words her thoughts.  I just can't wait till she has her best-selling novel.  Please purchase it in hard back, don't be cheap and get the paper back.

8
If you really knew Taryn, you would know that she has cried in the cat aisle at Petsmart

9
If you really knew Taryn, you would know that she has adjusted her bra in front of a window looking into a store. Then said, well I guess they got a show.

10
If you really knew Taryn, she really really loves me.

What I'm Luuvving Wednesday

Hey y'all!  I'm linking up today for What I'm Loving Wednesday (via This Kind of Love)  I haven't done one of these is for-ev-er and thought it might be a fun little hump day post.  So, without further ado, here is what I'm loving today!

1
I'm loving that the weather has been pretty much perfect lately.  It's not too hot, not too cold...not quite summer, not quite fall.  I don't feel guilty about buying fall clothes because it's not scorching out, but I still get to wear my white shorts all over town with heels.  Win-win situation, if you ask me.

2
I'm loving that Jenn at Munchkinland Designs is hard at work on a little facelift for this lil' blog-o-mine.  She obviously rocked it out the first time, and is totally game to do it again.  Can't wait to see how it turns out, and of course, share it with all my lovely readers

3
I'm really loving that I finally feel like I have the time and the energy to work on my blog again.  Wedding planning was seriously not my bag...it made me cranky and stressed out, and my posts suffered because of it.  I'm loving that I get to be an active participant on my page again...thanks for sticking with me!

4
I'm loving that my husband is working on a guest post for me this week!  It's a twist on the "If you really knew me" posts that have been going around.  I was interested in his perspective on this topic and what he would share with all of you about me!  Thanks Kelly at Messy Dirty Hair for the idea!

5
I'm loving that the projects around our house are finally coming together and more importantly, coming to an end.  I will have lived here a year in October, and in that time, we have put down new flooring, painted every wall, painted all the cabinets, re-finished the counter tops, put up backsplash, and bought new furniture.  Whew!  It's been quite a challenge maintaining our sanity this past year, but we have managed.  The only things we have left are the floors in the master bathroom, mirror mate frames for the mirrors in our bathrooms, and sadly, new paint for the living room again!  Once we finished all the changes in the kitchen, I realized that our main room needed to be a different color, so back to Lowes we go!

6
I am loving that we have a jam-packed few months coming up - first labor day weekend with my sister coming to visit, Music Midtown in Atlanta in September, and Keeneland in October with (hopefully) a visit from the boy's family in there somewhere as well.  It's good to have great family and friends!

7
I'm loving that I finally discovered Gel Manicures a few months ago, and can finally have sassy looking nails for more than 5 days at a time.  The last one I had lasted a full month!  Aside from the nail re-growth, the ends of my nails still looked great!  How did I not discover this sooner?

8
I'm loving that I made the leap a few weeks back and got my wedding set soldered together and sizing beads put it.  I was really hesitant about taking the plunge, but I could not stand that my band kept turning upside down and my e-ring spun back and forth.  I couldn't get them sized down anymore due to my ginormous knuckles.  The jeweler assured me it was the best route, and 2 sizing beads later, they are stuck together and fit perfectly.

9
I'm loving that my life feels normal again.  I feel like I am enjoying the little things so much more these days.  This was what I was most looking forward to about our wedding...being married.  It was never about the day or the dress...that was just a bonus!

10
I am loving that fall candles are starting to come out at Bath & Body Works!  I can't wait for them to go on promotion for 2 for $20 because I will be on that like white on rice.

I am loving all my boys.  My choobie (Sawyer), Jax-man, and of course husband.  They are my favorite part of every day.

Why we have dogs

Forget all that mumbo jumbo about dogs being "man's best friend."  I'm gonna give you the low down skinny on why the boy and I have dogs...  I may say that it's because Cosmo told me 3.5 years ago that all single girls need dogs, but that's only partially the truth.  The boy "claims" he has a dog because our little Jax man was a rescue who needed a home, but that's probably something he just made up to meet chicks at the dog park.  You wanna know the real reason we have dogs???

It's because we are cheap.

No, really.  Forget that a bag of dog food costs us $40 every 2 weeks.  Forget that the LL Bean dogs beds set me back $200 and an angry call to their customer service.  Forget the fact that we got rid of our carpet in favor of laminate flooring because it was easier to clean up the dog hair.  Forget all that.  We have dogs because we are cheap skates when it comes to home security.

About a month ago some guy came banging on our door at dinnertime (i.e., wine-time) talking about home security systems and could he give us a quote and all that jazz.  The boy being smart kept him confined to the porch and kindly told him that we weren't interested and joked that our dogs were our security system, blah blah blah.  Truth be told, our dogs are more for looks than show.  Jax is so desperate for attention that I feel confident that if anyone ever did come into our house, I think he'd invite them in for tea and a dog bone.  Sawyer, on the other hand may be able to ward off criminals by drowning (or disgusting) them in a pool of his own drool, but that's about as far as his defensive skills go.

We keep a pretty boring routine around our house.  We come home, go for a run, the dogs eat, the people eat, we relax/blog/clean etc.and around 11:00, the dogs lay on their overpriced dogs beds and pass out until the people get up in the morning.  Like clockwork, that is our lives (sad but true).  A few weeks ago, I rolled over at 2:00am to Sawyer's incessant barking from the living room.  I groggily said to husband, "ughhhh....why is he barking?"  to which he grumbled something inaudible and and buried his head in his pillow.  A few minutes later, he was still barking bloody murder when it dawned on me...this isn't normal.  I was suddenly alert.  "No seriously, why are they barking??" I said again to husband.  He seemed to register the oddness of it at the same time as me, and with both of us confident that we were a little too far from London for our dogs to be alerting Scotland Yard that the Dalmatians were missing, the boy got out of bed to check things out.

I laid in bed and listened to him walk into the living room and talk things over with the pups.  "What's going on Sawyer?" I heard him say.  I listened for their footsteps on the hardwood and heard the boy open the front door.  Then I heard him talking to someone.  Then I stopped breathing.  Who the f**k was on our front porch at 2:00am??  Next thing I know the door is closed and behind him and it's just me and the dogs in the house.

I continued to hold my breath.  Why do we hold our breath when we are straining to hear?  Like the lack of oxygen to my body will help me hear down the hallway and through the front door.  I can't hear anything, but after 7 hours passed (okay maybe it was 90 seconds) I was pretty positive he had been murdered on our front porch.  I got out of bed and decided I had to go outside and see what was going on.

For some reason, at 2:00 in the morning I own exactly zero clothing.  Literally.  For the life of me, I stood in my underwear staring at the outline of my closet and dresser, thinking the word "pants" over and over but I could not remember where any pants were.  Not sure why it mattered at that point, but I did not want to walk into the massacre I was convinced was waiting for me on my front porch in what husband referred to as my "granny panties."  Think Taryn....think.  Pants.  Pants.  What are pants?  My mind does not work at 2:00am.  Eventually I made my way to the dirty clothes basket in our room and found something with 2 leg holes in it.  I stumbled into the living room and stared at the front door, not sure if it was a trap to snag husband first and wait until I wandered outside into the same fate.  Again, I held my breath.  Our dogs had stopped barking and were sitting next to me waiting for the master they liked better to come back inside.

All of a sudden, husband walked in the house.  "What the hell is going on?"  I said.  "The police are on our front porch.  Apparently one of the neighbors called them and said someone was trying to break into our cars."  Really?????  Nothing was missing, but it did not stop my husband from standing in our driveway in his boxers for 10 minutes talking to policemen on bicycles while several of our neighbors stood on their porches. Why is our life so weird?  And more importantly, why is it that people want to break into my piece of crap car all the time?  It only has 2 hubcaps for the love of God!  It's a 2003 Toyota...not a brand new Lexus!  Aside from a pile of receipts and an old yoga mat, there is nothing in my car.  Oddly enough, even though neither the boy or me remember locking our cars when we got home, they were both locked when we went to check things out.  Hmmmm....

By the time the ridiculousness of the evening settled in, I was already over it.  30 minutes of my precious sleep time on a weekday was enough for me, and I crawled back in bed, but not before making the boy check and re-check all the windows and doors to make sure they were locked.  I was already on my way back to sleepy-town when the boy launched back out of bed, having been clearly stewing over something he forgot to do.  He returned to our room with a baseball bat....because clearly a Louisville Slugger would stop the stray bullets should our petty car thief return and somehow manage to outsmart the locks on our front door, despite not being able to figure out the locks on our cars.

We lay quietly in bed, and just before falling back asleep I said, "I wouldn't be surprised if that damn home security salesman called the police and made up a story just to get a sale."  The boy's response...."I thought that too."

And that's why we have dogs.
